It was during our recent trip to Bali that I discovered this exotic earthy potion, steeped in rich Balinese tradition and culture yet simple in its ingredients and packed with nutritional potency. If you have not tried Jamu, it is so easy to make, and a delight to drink. That is if you like Turmeric of course.
I was talking to our ever friendly table angel, who cared for us above and beyond, about Jamu, when in a heart beat she was out in the kitchen making us a brew !!

Jamu is a traditional Balinese drink. With Kunyit or Turmeric as the power base. The base ingredient for nearly every Jamu concoction is turmeric or kunyit as it is locally known. Just one glass of fresh squeezed kunyit each day is guaranteed to boost your health. Skin conditions, digestion and joint pains, can all be improved with a daily dose. It is both anti- oxidant and anti-inflammatory, two properties which are highly useful in preventing ageing. The concoction may contain other herbs, depending on the ailment.
The ingredients in our Jamu potion was
- 100g of fresh turmeric grated
- pinch of salt
- Slice of lime
- 1 TB honey
- 1 TB tamarind paste
- 2 glasses of water
Grate turmeric and add all other ingredients to a saucepan, bring to boil then simmer for 20 minutes.
Strain and drink. ENJOY 🙂
Jamu need not be cooked if you are up for a more potent brew.
